Male betta fish (Betta splendens) are intelligent, colourful fish that thrive when given a warm, clean, and well-maintained aquarium. Although they are often sold in small containers, they require a properly equipped tank to live a healthy and active life.

Tank Size

  • Minimum: 45 litres

  • Recommended: 30–60 litres for the best quality of life

  • Larger tanks provide more stable water conditions and allow for natural behaviour.

Water Temperature

  • Ideal: 25–27°C

  • Use a reliable aquarium heater and thermometer.

  • Avoid sudden temperature changes, as these can cause stress and illness.

Filtration

  • Use a gentle filter with a low flow.

  • Bettas have long fins and can struggle in strong currents.

  • Sponge filters or adjustable-flow filters are excellent choices.

Water Parameters

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Ammonia: 0 ppm

  • Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: Below 20 ppm

Regular water testing helps keep these levels safe.

Water Changes

  • Change 20–30% of the water every week.

  • Always treat new tap water with a water conditioner to remove chlorine and chloramine.

  • Vacuum the substrate during water changes to remove waste.

Aquarium Setup

Include:

  • Live or silk plants

  • Hiding places such as caves or driftwood

  • Smooth decorations without sharp edges

  • Floating plants to provide shade

  • A secure lid, as bettas are excellent jumpers

Lighting

  • Provide 8–10 hours of light each day.

  • Too much light can encourage algae growth.

  • A timer helps maintain a consistent day/night cycle.

Feeding

Feed a high-quality betta pellet as the staple diet.

You can also offer:

  • Frozen or live bloodworms

  • Brine shrimp

  • Daphnia

Feed once or twice daily, only as much as your betta can eat in around two minutes. Remove any uneaten food.

Tank Mates

Male bettas are territorial and should never be housed with another male betta OR FEMALES PERMANATELY)

Suitable tank mates in a large, well-established aquarium may include:

  • Peaceful snails

  • Amano or larger shrimp (though some bettas may chase them)

  • Small peaceful fish that are not brightly coloured or fin-nipping

Always monitor introductions carefully, as each betta has its own temperament.

Signs of a Healthy Betta

A healthy male betta should:

  • Swim actively and explore the aquarium

  • Eat eagerly

  • Display vibrant colours

  • Have fully open fins with no tears or rot

  • Build bubble nests (this is a normal breeding behaviour and often indicates the fish feels comfortable)

Common Health Problems

Watch for:

  • Fin rot

  • Ich (white spot disease)

  • Swim bladder issues

  • Velvet disease

  • Fungal infections

Good water quality is the best way to prevent most illnesses.

Lifespan

With proper care, a male betta typically lives 3–5 years, though some can live even longer.
