THE CARE OF OUR FISH
We are very proud of the way our bettas are kept and cared for, this is from the moment they are born to the moment they arrive to us and then when they are delivered to you, every step of the way you can be rest assured that we care for your bettas with great love and care!
Our fish house has been design to house around 300+ bettas, we are a fully licensed bettas specialist, with a 5 STAR rated license and fully inspected.
We are fully trained under a NATIONAL DIPLOMA AT DISTINCTION LEVEL AND OATA TRAINED and we ensure that every bit of our training goes above and beyond for your new little family members.
We source all your bettas from reputable breeders in Thailand, who breed, show and sell betta/s, they provide us with show line bettas and ensure that they are fed on a natural diet of MOINA, which are a staple food to bettas.
We then have them carefully packed and shipped from Thailand to the UK, this is where our responsibility and our care take over.
Upon arrival your bettas will receive a quarantine process, where they will be wormed and treated to ensure that they are in the best possible health before sale.
Whilst in our care, we test all our sumped systems 3x a week, water change the water 1-2 times a week and our filtration systems are checked every other day and maintained on a weekly basis. Our filtration media within the sumped systems is always maintained to a strict schedule and we ensure that all our media is to the highest spec, ensuring our water is as pristine as possible here at The Aqua Factor.
When it comes to feeding our bettas, we maintain that a natural diet as close to nature is the best and limit feeding pellet feeds where possible, we only feed pellet one a week.
We provide our bettas with defrosted based foods, mainly consisting of Brine Shrimp, Glass Worm, Daphnia, Tubixfex Worm, Blood Worms and Black Mosquito Larvae, adding in Vitamins and Minerals to ensure much like us our bettas immune systems are maintained to a high level.
Due to the water here in Oxford not being the best for bettas, we have to mix our water with RO water we do a 75% RO - 25% TAP WATER ratio to achieve a PH of around 7.4.
All our records are available on request.
OUR FISH HOUSE
Our fish house is state of the art and allows us to ensure around the clock 24/7 care for our fish.
We have adapted our fish house with smart technology which allows us with the click of an app on our smart phones we can see the temperature of the fish house, turn the heater on and off if the temperature is not correct.
It allows us to turn the lights on and off when required, but also allows us to maintain the fish to a natural daylight/night time settings, giving the fish 12 hours of daylight each day.
All our fish are kept on temperature controlled barrack systems with smart thermostats to ensure that the heat of the water is maintained to a constant temperature, it also allows us to check in on our phones and also pings a notification to us if the temperature gets too high or too low.
MOST of our fish are kept on barrack systems which hold 24 bettas each, we have 11 of these, we also have 5 systems which hold 32 bettas.
NOW before you see the video below please note that our bettas are NOT kept in these forever and these are just temporary homes until they are sold....please also note that halfmoons and giants are kept in much bigger housing and NOT on our barrack systems.
So why do we find keeping our bettas on these systems the best way? As you will see in the video below, we keep one betta per pot, these are ideal as it houses one betta per pot, which is continually filtered throughout the day, the water is pumped from the sump systems and then up through a drip system where the water is filtered out through the back of the pot and back down into our sump tanks, where the water is filtered and returns clean back into the tank.
Housing our bettas this way means we can ensure that they receive one on one care, we can check them daily individually and observe that they are getting enough food each to maintain optimal health.
We have had to adapt our systems a little bit....as you know may or may not know, bettas love to jump! So we have had to place white mesh over the top to prevent any loss of life due to jumping, it also allows us to place a small leaf at the top of the tanks where the bettas can rest and make bubble nests, providing natural enrichment for them.
All our bettas are individually videoed and photographed, as you will see in the video each barrack system has a unique number and also a colour code, this ensures that when we list our fish that no mistakes can happen and the fish you purchase is the one that you will get!
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us!
